UKWSL strives to create a family-friendly and flexible working culture

National Work Life Week is organised by Working Families, the UK’s work-life balance charity. It’s an annual campaign to get both employers and employees talking about wellbeing at work, and the importance of the “work-life” fit.

There are 13 million working mothers and fathers in the UK, making up more than a third of the workforce. But often the way that work is designed, organised and advertised stops people with caring responsibilities from reaching their potential. The coronavirus pandemic has shone a spotlight on the importance of truly flexible and family-friendly workplaces.

This week highlights the need for the UK to do things differently, helping to create work that works for families, people and the economy.

At UKWSL, sustainability isn’t just about waste and the environment. It’s vitally important that we provide the right environment for our staff. A healthy work life balance means teams are more productive and more committed to delivering excellence for our customers. We address this on many levels.

Flexible working solutions for our staff reduces unnecessary stress and less chance of people feeling the need for a “duvet day”. Our average sickness rate is just 1.53% of employee working hours.

It’s important to us that we employ locally. Not only is it good for the local economy, but it reduces travel. Let’s be honest, nobody wants to sit in a car for hours and hours every day staring at the car in front. 78% of our team members live within 25 miles of our offices in Newark. This increases to 100% when you look specifically at desk-based staff. For our staff that have to drive to meetings, audits etc we’re committed to reducing travelling hours by 30% by March 2023.

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind
Our Cycle to Work scheme promotes healthier journeys to work and reduces environmental pollution. This year 10% of our employees joined the scheme which continues to promote our belief in “healthy body, healthy mind”.

Mental ill-health affects just as many people as physical ill-health. In 2018, it was recorded that over 16 million people in the UK had experienced mental illness (that’s one in four people). That’s why mental health issues are as much of a priority as physical ill-health.

We’ve trained two mental health first aiders who are the go-to people for anyone in our business who needs support during tough times.

Perks Of The Job
In late 2018 we launched Perkbox to all of our team members. It’s a app based platform designed to enrich the employee experience – both inside and outside of work. Four products are available to employees – Recognition, Medical, Insights, and Perks. Almost every team member has logged in to the app and together, they’ve redeemed in excess of 1,200 perks.
